San Diego Black Nurses Associations, Inc. (SDBNA) had their 3rd Annual Health and Wellness Expo on Saturday, August 27th. The site of this year’s event was San Diego Community College District Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) on Ocean View Blvd. in Southeastern San Diego.

The SDBNA Planning Committee headed by 1st Vice President, Dr. Barbara West, spent the greater part of the past year making contacts, negotiating and organizing with various healthcare related vendors and secured the participation of sixty seven (67) committed individuals and organizations.

The goals of SDBNA, for these Expos, are first, to increase consumer awareness of services available to them and to provide knowledge on how to access these services. Secondly, the goal is to provide “on the site” health screenings and health education.

Working along with SDBNA and contributing in the sponsorship of the Expo were: Walgreen’s, AHF Pharmacy, Kaiser Permanente, UCSD Health Systems, County of San Diego Health & Human Services, La Maestra, Susan Komen, Molina Health Care, National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), Philippine Nurses Association of San Diego (PNASD) and Grand Canyon University. Other vendors included The Kidney Trust, Southwestern Dental Hygiene, San Diego Black Health Associates, SDG&E, Healthy & Hearty Nutrition, Health Insurances of California, “Ask The Doctor”, and Effective Hand-washing Techniques.

Health screenings were provided by Kaiser Permanente, La Maestra, The Kidney Trust, UCSD Health Systems, Susan Komen and PNASD. Fully equipped medical vans on-site were Kaiser Permanente and La Maestra.

There were special activities provided for children such as face painting and music. All children were given backpacks – 157 total distributed. They also were given a Health Passport Book and directed to visit specific vendors to receive a stamp. When completed, the child was given a $5.00 Target or Wal-Mart gift card as reward. Firemen from Fire Engine House #19 were also present, giving tours and talked about safety.

Dr. West’s Planning Committee Members included Monique Shaw, Co-Chairperson, Dr. Ana Navarro, Denise Alston, Norine Sigler, Michelle Stewart, Syvera Hardy, Bonnie Copland, Inge Taylor, Shirley Lipscomb, Priscilla Bramlett and ex-officio member, President Ethel Weekly-Avant. In addition to SDBNA Committee and SDBNA Members, volunteers were recruited from the community to assist visitors throughout the day.

The Expo is a huge undertaking, requiring a tremendous amount of work, generosity and commitment from many people. These past 3 events have produced work well done and well received. We believe we have met the goals of providing education and improving the health and wellness of the community. Stay tuned for SDBNA Health Expo IV in August 2017!
